A plan is being prepared to ensure clean environment and overcome noise, dust and other pollution caused by the stone crushing industry. This was told in a meeting attended by Director Environment Protection Punjab, Shagufta Shahjehan, District Officer EP, Shafqat Farooqi, DD Mines, Inspector Mines, EDO Revenue, DO Health, DO Roads, and representatives of stone crushers association.
The meeting expressed grave concern over the damage caused to plants and crops, animals and human health by open and unhindered stone crushing and underlined immediate need for steps to check the situation.
It was disclosed that Chief Minister Punjab, taking serious note of the situation, had appointed a consultant firm to suggest suitable solution to the problem. A sum of Rs01 million had been earmarked in the current budget to conduct survey and submit a report to the Punjab Government in this regard.
The CEO of the consultant firm Dr Jehangir Sial also addressed the meeting.
DO Health observed that the open stone-blasting and crushing, besides crushing injuries and even deaths, was resulting in increased cases of eye and chest diseases.
EDO Revenue assured the meeting that the district government would extend all possible assistance and co-operation in environment protection efforts.
