Nutritional supplements, now being taken in increasing quantities by older people, do not appear to offer any additional protection against infection, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) on Saturday (August 5).
Scottish doctors enrolled 910 men and women over 65, who were given either a daily supplement of multivitamins or multiminerals or a harmless look alike pill.
They took the tablets for a year, during which they were asked to record any visits to the doctor or hospital, the duration of any infection and their quality of life.
There was no significant difference between the groups on any of the three measures.
