Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) secretary-general and leader of the opposition Maulana Fazlur Rehman condemned the government move to expel foreign students studying in country's religious institutions and urged upon President Musharraf to take back the decision.
Addressing a news conference here on Sunday, he also blamed the government for worsening state of affairs in Waziristan agency. The MMA leader asked the government to name persons who were taking people on private vehicles across the boarder.
"We need an answer who were those elements taking people from Waziristan and giving them training in 'Askari camps' in Mansehra," he stated. It was unfortunate that allegations of extremism were being levelled on religious scholars, he added.
Speaking about Hasba bill, he said: "We respect the Supreme Court and its decision, however, we will continue our constitutional and legal fight on the issue."
Dilating his views on local government elections in the country, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said General Musharraf himself had become a party to it. He said President Musharraf while addressing public meetings was canvassing for the government-sponsored candidates, that shows the very intent of authorities to install its chosen candidates in these elections.
Taking serious note of allegations levelled upon him by information minister Shaikh Rashid regarding his visit to India, the opposition leader said Shaikh Rashid himself was involved in training people in a Jihadi camp in Fateh Jang.
Being a government representative, before making allegations the minister should first make a peep on his past activities, he added.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman also castigated the government for not allowing degree holders of madaris to contest local government elections and said this step was inequitable and unjust.
