Mauritius' economy grew by an estimated 0.7 percent in the first quarter of 2005 helped by an expansion in the services sector, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) said on Tuesday. This is the first time the CSO has published quarterly results and did not give a comparative figure.
The statistics office has forecast gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 3.8 percent in 2005, after slashing earlier projections from 5.1 percent due to bad weather.
The CSO said growth for the first quarter of 2005 was propelled by the services sector. The important tourism and financial services sectors grew by around 6 percent.
But the key agriculture, manufacturing and construction sectors registered declines.
The agriculture sector eased by 0.3 percent while manufacturing fell by 11.3 percent, undermined largely by a contraction in the export processing zone made up mostly of textile and garments.
