The number of US job openings increased in June but fewer positions were filled, the Labour Department said on Wednesday. The department said 3.541 million jobs opened in June, up 3.7 percent from 3.416 million in May.
There were more jobs available in the construction, manufacturing, trade/transportation/utilities, leisure/hospitality and government sectors. Professional/business services and education/health services both saw a decrease in openings.
Total hirings fell 2.2 percent to 4.635 million from 4.740 million in May, according to the department's Job Openings and Labour Turnover Survey. Only two sectors, trade/tranportation/utilities and leisure/hospitality, increased their hirings.
Total May separations, which include voluntary resignations, layoffs, firings and retirements, fell 3.2 percent to 4.362 million from 4.504 million in May, with only the government sector showing an increase, although very slight.
