Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and his Japanese counterpart Junichiro Koizumi on Wednesday held wide-ranging talks focused on boosting bilateral relations and regional and international issues. The talks in Tokyo covered all facets of relations.
Shaukat took up specific proposals with Koizumi to further strengthen trade and commercial relations between the two countries.
The two leaders discussed regional and international situation particularly the situation in Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran, besides UN reforms, Pakistan's relations with its neighbouring countries, and war against terrorism.
It is expected that Japan will enhance Cupertino with Pakistan in education and health.
Shaukat Aziz was assisted at talks by Ministers Liaquat Ali Jatoi, Jehangir Tareen, Minister of State Hina Rabbani Khar and Foreign Secretary Riaz Muhammad Khan. Some Japanese Ministers assisted Koizumi.
Earlier, talking to Japanese Minister for Economy, Trade & Industry Soichi Nakagawa, Shaukat said that economic and fiscal reforms, initiated by his government, had led to economic growth in Pakistan.
He briefed Nakagawa about Pakistan's economic policies and programmes. He appreciated Japan's role in economic development of Pakistan and said that it had been rendering valuable assistance in different fields.
Nakagawa welcomed political stability in Pakistan and improvement in its economic conditions. He hoped that resumption of yen loan would usher in a new era of Cupertino between Pakistan and Japan.
Japanese Finance Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki also called on Shaukat Aziz and discussed ways to further enhance bilateral economic and trade ties.
Later three agreements were signed here to strengthen Cupertino in water, power and tourism sectors.
The agreements on water and power were signed by Minister of State for Economic Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar and Governor of Japan Bank for International Cupertino, Kyosuke Sinozawa.
Japan Bank would provide financial assistance of about $146 million for Lower Chenab canal system Rehabilitation Project and Load Dispatch System Upgrade Project.
Shaukat witnessed the agreements signing.
