'Rs 80 million to be spent on Peshawar suburban roads' improvement'

The NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani has said the dilapidated roads of Peshawar and its suburbs would be improved at a cost of Rs 8o million within two weeks adding lethargy on the part of government officials would not be tolerated in that regard.
This assurance was by him while talking to a delegation of city dwellers led by Shams ur Rehman Shamsi. The chief minister said provincial government was responsible to relieve the masses and nobody would be allowed to add to the people's woes.
He said he conducted a thorough inspection of the dilapidated city roads yesterday, adding "The provincial government has been issuing huge funds to the district government for the renovation of roads, but these were used for 'political purposes'."
He directed the concerned officials to ensure transparency in the use of funds for repair of roads. He said the people, for the first time in the history of the country, voted the medium class to power, adding the MMA government would not harm the confidence of people.
"We would not like to sound trumpet of our own praise. We do not want to spend huge amounts on publicising our uplift schemes through television. We are selflessly serving the masses and Allah Almighty is witnessing our efforts," Durrani revealed.
He cited the steps taken by provincial government in the fields of education, health, agriculture, attainment of provincial rights and development of the province, which included free education up to matric, free textbooks, establishment of A-grade hospitals in all 24 districts, net hydel profit of Rs 18 billion annually, formation of arbitrary committee for outstanding Rs 345 billions of the province. He said the provincial rights would not be compromised.
He said the MMA government was a democratic one, having no allegations of financial irregularities, adding three budgets had been passed unanimously. "We always run the affairs of assembly like a jirga, and the MMA government never discriminated the members of minorities, women, government party or opposition, by providing equal funds to all."
He said the MMA government believed in justice and appealed to the people to back MMA.
CONDOLENCE: NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani has expressed his profound grief and sorrow over the demise of a renowned educationist Professor Shafi Sabir.
In a condolence message to Engineer Sarfaraz son of Shafi Sabir, the chief minister termed his death as an irreparable loss for the educational circles.
Paying glowing tributes to the deceased for his services in the fields of education, journalism and literature, Durrani said his writings would serve milestones for the studious readers and added these writings were unforgettable.
The chief minister expressed sympathy with the members of bereaved family including Muhammad Mumtaz, Muhammmad Ejaz, Zulfiqar Ali, Zafar Islam, and also prayed for the departed soul.
