The Election Commission on Friday empowered the District Returning Officers, Returning Officers, Assistant Returning Offices and the Presiding Officers with the powers of magistrate first class.
They have been allowed to exercise these powers on the polling days in respect of offences punishable under section 169, section 170, section 171, section 172, section 173 and section 174 of the Local Government Ordinances, 2001.
Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar has authorised the district returning officers, assistant returning officers and the presiding officers appointed for each polling station for the conduct of 1st Phase and 2nd Phase of the Local Government Elections-2005 in the Punjab, Sindh, NWFP and Balochistan Provinces to exercise the powers of a Magistrate First Class on the polling days in respect of offences punishable under section 169, section 170, section 171, section 172, section 173 and section 174 of the Local Government Ordinances, 2001 of the four Provinces to take cognisance of any such offence under any of the clauses of sub-section (I) of section 190 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898 (Act V of 1898), and to try any such offence in a summary way in accordance with the provisions of the said Code, relating to summary trial.
