Taking exception to reports of misuse of state machinery, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has asked the ministers to abide by Election Commission's code of conduct. Pakistan Muslim League Information Secretary and State Minister Tariq Azeem said this at a news conference here on Friday.
The minister said that voters had been provided conducive environment to exercise their right to vote in the coming local bodies elections.
He rejected APC's claim about pre-poll rigging. "How can this be correct when a candidate of Jamhoori Watan Party has been declared elected unopposed?" he said.
He said that 97 percent of the complaints the Election Commission received were baseless and without any proof.
Azeem said that the opposition parties had no programme for the betterment of the masses. Therefore, they were levelling baseless allegations against the ruling party and its allies.
He said that it was necessary for promotion of democracy that criticism should be constructive and one should have magnanimity to respect the people's mandate.
"Instead of wasting energy, the opposition parties should support the government for the sake of progress and prosperity of the country," he contended.
He played down APC's allegations, and said that disgruntled leaders of opposition parties were joining the ruling PML.
Referring to APC's threat of en masse resignations and launching an anti-government campaign, he said that the opposition had already hurled this threat and people know what their intentions are.
The minister claimed that due to sagacious policies of President Musharraf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and Shujaat Hussain, Pakistan's image had considerably improved abroad.
About the ruling coalition, he said that a winning combination had emerged on the national scene and the country was marching towards progress.
He said that PPP had become 'propaganda party' and after denying that Surrey Palace belonged to the Bhuttos, they contacted courts for its possession.
The minister clarified that the government had nothing to do with Swiss court cases against Benazir as these were filed before the present government.
