The Karachi, unlike the past, is awake day and night and its people and the government here are marching ahead together on the path of progress and prosperity of the country.
Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul-Ibad Khan has said this while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of "Jashn-e-Azadi Mela" held under the auspices of City District Government Karachi (CDGK) at Kashmir Road Sports Complex here on Thursday.
The four-day fair has been organised by the CDGK Community Development Department on the directive of the Sindh Governor to provide recreation to people and familiarise them about the culture of the interior of Sindh.
Besides colourful recreational activities, stalls of handicrafts, books, Bonsai art and garments have also been set up. Many programmes have been arranged for the people to celebrate Independence Day in the city, which will also highlight the significance of this auspicious occasion.
The Governor Dr Ishrat-u1-Ibad Khan said Karachi had its own glory and its people were friendly.
About street crimes, the Governor said such crimes were found across the world, adding there was marked improvement in the situation in this regard as against the past when people feared of coming out of homes. However, the government was seriously endeavouring for elimination of the crimes, he added.
He said Lyari, which was once described a No-Go area, was in peace as criminals were on the run and big criminals had been arrested.
People need not to be worried or scared and should have positive and optimistic approach and see the social welfare activities and the development projects, which were being completed at an accelerated pace by round-the-clock work, he added.
Talking to newsmen, the Governor said high alert in the city had been enforced in view of Independence Day celebrations and Local Bodies elections, so that security personnel could discharge their responsibilities more promptly and people would have peaceful environment on those important occasions.
To a question, he said no town of Karachi was sensitive and the administrative affairs were being monitored deeply, adding all arrangements had been finalised and government wanted the holding of elections in transparent and impartial manner.
The police and rangers would be responsible for security and the decision to this effect had been taken in principle, while Army would be on stand-by, he added.
The Governor said the shortage of personnel would be fulfilled by reducing the protocol of VVIPs as the government had to work within the available resources.
Earlier, Sindh Governor laid the foundation stone of the reconstruction of 13/D Road near Saeedabad Police Training Centre from Hub River Road to Kalakot N-4 stop Via Roji Cinema, Baldia Town. The project will be completed in 12 months at a cost of Rs 64.9 million.
