The two arch rivals in trade politics, ie Businessmen Forum (BF) and Businessmen Panel (BP) appear to be moving towards a covert reconciliation. The continuation of Eng M A Jabbar as incharge of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) cell in the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) provides an indication towards the softening of attitudes between the two foes.
BP swept the FPCCI elections held last year and with the change of hierarchy new office-bears took charge and various committees working under its umbrella were abandoned.
Jabbar as the FPCCI Vice-President was incharge of the WTO cell till December last year. Being a front rank worker and ardent supporter of the BF, he should have also been asked to relinquish charge to make way for the nominee of the President, who belongs to BP group. But to the surprise of supporters of both the groups, the FPCCI President last month asked Jabbar to continue as incharge of the WTO cell.
In this regard, the President has also given him a letter. Generally, this step of the President has been welcomed but the die-hards on both the sides appear flabbergasted over this development.
BP supporters feel that it was their right to head various committees and other bodies working under the FPCCI.
Captain Rasheed Abro, spokesman of the BF when contacted to comment on this development, said the two groups stood apart and there is no question of any reproach because each has its own manifesto to follow.
Jabbar has probably been retained in his individual capacity to head the WTO cell because of his vast knowledge of the WTO affairs. He has attended several meetings of the WTO held within the country, at all levels, as well as abroad.
He even attended the ministerial meeting held in Cancun, Mexico. BF is proud that the talent of their member has been recognised by the FPCCI President and he has been retained to contribute his expertise towards educating members of the business community about the WTO regime.
