The Supreme Court of Pakistan has provisionally allowed one Rana Shaukat Ali of Faisalabad to contest LB election for the office of Nazim subject to final decision of the court.
The petitioner had approached the apex court against the decision of the Lahore High Court (LHC) which did not allow him to contest LB election on the basis of a certificate issued by a madrassah.
The petitioner contended that the Peshawar High Court had already allowed a number of candidates to contest LB election on madrassah certificates. The petitioner counsel contended that earlier MNAs and MPAs were also allowed to contest elections.
He also contended that madrassah certificates were equivalent to graduation. It was contended that madrassahs were affiliated with universities and the University of Punjab and other universities in Pakistan had accepted the certificate of madrassah equal to graduation.
He said the respondent courts illegally and without lawful authority had rejected his petition and did not allow him to contest LB poll.
The court, after hearing the petitioner's counsel at length, allowed him to contest election provisionally and adjourned the proceedings for further hearing.
