The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued notices to principal secretaries of Governor Punjab and Chief Minister directing them to appear before the court in a petition filed for the recovery of Zubair Qayyum and seven others allegedly in the custody of a federal law enforcing agency.
Earlier, the law officers appeared before the court and failed to inform the court about the whereabouts of detainees. The court, accordingly, directed the principal secretaries of governor and chief minister, to appear before the court.
The court observed that it was necessary to implement the constitutional rights of the people of Pakistan and added that courts were bound to provide justice to the people of Pakistan.
The court further observed that the government was also bound constitutionally to protect the fundamental rights of people and provide protection to their life and property. The court had earlier called SSP Lahore but he informed the court that detainees were not in their custody.
The LHC has issued notice to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for August 16 in an objection case filed by Pakistan Peoples Party through its chairman human rights committee, praying to the court to direct the respondent ECP to hold elections on the basis of voters list of 2002. The petitioner contended that the respondent ECP is holding local bodies' elections on the basis of voters' list of 2000, therefore, one million people of Pakistan will be deprived of their right of franchise. The LHC office has returned the petition, as the matter was not of urgent nature.
