The 58th Independence Day was celebrated amid tight security in Multan and other parts of southern Punjab on Sunday in a befitting manner. Police and jawans of Elite Force were deployed in the city squares while the vehicles were thoroughly searched to avert any mishap.
Motorcycle rally was organised by the Muslim League in the city. Special prayers were offered after the Fajr prayers for the solidarity and integrity of the country and progress of the nation.
The main function of the day was celebrated in the office of the former district nazim where children presented a tableau and national songs. Punjab Minister for Agricultural Marketing Rana Qasim Noon was the chief guest. The minister also visited the District Jail and announced to pay the fine of the poor prisoners from his personal pocket to get them released.
DCO Iftikhar Babur visited the Children Complex and gave the inmates juices and biscuit packets and asked about their health. A function was held in Lahore High Court Multan Bench .in Bahauddin Zakariya University vice-chancellor Professor Dr Naseer Ahmed Khan unfurled the national flag. Chief Executive of Mepco Agha Nazim Ali hoisted the flag atop central offices while buildings were also decorated with colourful bunting, flags.
Local newspapers brought out special supplements while radio (PBC) and FM-103 aired special programmes on the day. The national flag was hoisted at all the public and important private buildings.
Political and social organisations held public meetings in which speakers shed light on the struggle launched by the Muslims of the subcontinent for creation of a separate homeland under the leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah. The Christian community also took an active part in the Independence Day celebrations.
