Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has planned to construct a new jetty in the proximity of Bhit Island to replace the 300-year old small landing pier, at a cost of Rs 50 million. The Minister of Ports and Shipping, Babar Ghauri, laid the foundation-stone here on Monday.
The feasibility and survey report had been carried out by National Engineering Services of Pakistan (Nespak). Construction work would commence in two months and completion would take one year.
The new jetty at Bhit Island would serve a population of over 6,000 residents of the island. These people mostly belong to fishing community. This would have a wide trestle as passageway.
The project comprises 6-feet high concrete wall to be built on both ends of the trestle and on top of that steel railing shall be laid. A 100-feet long and 50 feet wide concrete platform shall be made for loading/unloading of goods.
The jetty will berth three boats at a time. An eight feet wide stairway would be provided adjacent to the jetty. Concrete piles shall be used for making the base of jetty and trestle. On top of the piles, pre-stressed concrete beam shall be laid.
Fender and Ballard in prescribed size shall be installed for fastening of boats. The jetty is designed for 60 feet light vessels and boats. The platform would be built on the jetty for the commuters where they can sit with their goods they want to carry. The jetty will remain functional in all seasons and would be properly dredged.
KPT is also constructing a floating jetty at Keamari Boat Basin to provide additional facilities to commuters of Bhit Island. Through this loading and unloading of goods can easily take place at sea level.
Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister on Tourism and Culture, Faisal Gabol, Chief Engineer of Nespak and others were also present on the occasion.
