The city remained calm as Karachiites cast their votes in local government elections on Thursday in 7 Towns amid reports of violation of the Code of Conduct by some parties in five Towns that forced the opponents to boycott polls.
The law enforcement agencies remained on high alert to avert any untoward incident and made some arrests in connection with law and order, including a presiding officer for violating election rules.
A journalist was beaten seriously by the activists of the ruling party that claimed the ownership of the city. Of 18 towns, seven remained as 'Grey Areas' where the workers of the ruling coalition forced a particular panel members to leave the polling stations in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Baldia, Jamshed, Liaquatabad, Korangi, Landhi, Gulberg, Saddar and New Karachi Towns.
Many voters in these towns were disallowed to exercise their right by some elements, a source said.
In some areas the staff deputed by the Election Commission (EC) remained helpless to resolve voters list issues.
Despite repeated requests, the EC staff turned a deaf ear to complaints and no arrangements were made to provide additional voters lists at polling stations.
Few incidents of lawlessness were reported in Saddar Town but the situation was controlled.
Some miscreants tried to harass the polling staff at some places and aerial firing incidents at some city parts were also reported.
Despite apprehensions of bloodshed and violence, no major incident of lawlessness and violence was reported from the city and overall the situation remained peaceful.
