The cultivation of cotton crop has been completed over an area of 3.282 million hectares achieving 101.1 percent of the set target of 3.247 million hectares for the year 2005-06. According to official sources the cotton sowing has also marked an increase of 1.6 percent over 2004-05 when it was cultivated over an area of 3.230 million hectares.
Federal Agriculture Committee has enhanced the cultivation area of the cotton crop following the bumper yield of 14.6 million bales achieved last year.
The better price of the commodity in the past has also encouraged the farmers to put in more concentration and efforts to expand the cultivated area. In Punjab province cotton has been sown over an area of 2.632 million hectares against the set target of 2.56 million hectares.
The sowing of cotton in Sindh province has registered an increase of 8.2 percent over the corresponding period of the last year achieving about 101.3 percent of the set target.
