Jamaat-i-Islami Secretary General Syed Munawar Hasan has demanded resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner (EC) for Allegedly letting the massive rigging and bogus polling by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) workers in Karachi. "An independent and full time Election Commissioner should be appointed to ensure the free and fair local bodies' elections of the coming phases," he said.
In a statement on Thursday, Syed Munawar Hasan said the results of local bodies in elections in Karachi had been manipulated at gunpoint and the people of Karachi would not accept the rigged polls.
"We will give tough political fight to the terrorists who had ruined the peace of Karachi through their loot and plunder," said the Jamaat-i-Islami leader.
He also condemned the siege of Karachi polling stations, bogus voting and violent attacks by MQM workers.
He alleged the MQM workers had physically taken control of more then two dozen polling stations in Karachi in the first half of polling time.
Polling staff was harassed and made to stamp the ballot papers of MQM candidates, he said.
This hooliganism, he said, was also witnessed at the women polling stations. Women polling agents of Al-Khidmat groups and other candidates were beaten up. The MQM people, but the EC lodged complaints with the Election Commission on the violation of code of conduct and the Rangers acted as silent spectators, he claimed.
