Australian former Guantanamo Bay detainee Mamdouh Habib said on Tuesday he had been attacked and stabbed near his Sydney home, despite being under almost constant surveillance from Australian security agencies.
Habib told Australia's Seven television network the attack happened late on Sunday as he and his wife Maha Habib were walking to their suburban home.
He suffered minor injuries but had a 6-cm (2.4-inch) cut across his stomach.
"I'm doing the right thing. I'm trying to go back to my life, and these people don't want to leave me alone," Habib said.
Habib spent three years in Guantanamo Bay on suspicion of helping Osama bin Laden's militant al Qaeda network after he was arrested crossing from Pakistan into Afghanistan three weeks after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.
Habib returned home to Australia on January 28 after US authorities failed to find enough evidence to put him on trial.
