Police and administration have beefed up security arrangements, especially in the 843 sensitive polling stations in Faisalabad districts out of the 2,925 polling stations for holding fair and smooth second phase local government elections in a peaceful manner in the province on August 25.
Faisalabad police have registered 11 cases in various city police stations against more than 70 persons including 6 contesting candidates for violating code of conduct before conclusion of election campaign.
During checking of election arrangement, a mysterious person was arrested by the Batala Colony Police in area of Union council 225 along with the large number of old and new identity cards. According to police Imdad Khan was planning rigging for his candidate's win. Further investigation is in progress.
At present, Faisalabad emerged on top in respect of election activities in Punjab, where 10,243 candidates including 1,132 for Nazim and Naib Nazim seats in 289 union councils are contesting in the local bodies elections.
A total of 2.803 million voters will exercise their right of franchise to elect Nazims, Naib Nazims and councillors here in Faisalabad district at total 11,427 polling booths in the local governments elections being held on August 25.
Meanwhile, army troops have already assumed their duty in Faisalabad in connection with the local bodies elections. Army has set up its Command Centre here in the Circuit House and the army as well as police troops have begun Flag March here.
A spokesman of the district administration informed here that all sensitive polling stations of the district would be under strict watch of the army troops. In case of any irregularity or rowdyism, strict action would be taken against the concerned persons. He made it clear that all the law-enforcing agencies had held their co-ordination meeting and a foolproof action plan had been finalised so that the polling could be ensured in a peaceful manner.
DCO Athar Hussain Khan Sial said that on the election day the law-enforcing agencies would carryout patrolling throughout the district and the persons involved in any sort of disturbance or rowdyism would be crushed using full strength & might.
He made it clear to the candidates by holding meetings with them that on the polling day, carrying of fire arms by any person other than the members of the law enforcing agencies would be completely prohibited. In case of the violation of this ban or election code of conduct, a disqualification against the concerned candidate would be forwarded to the election commission, which would also held good even in case of success.
Meanwhile, in Jhang all arrangements have been finalised for holding local government elections in a peaceful manner in the district on August 25. District administration has made all possible arrangements for holding fair and transparent polling. District police has finalised arrangements to maintain law and order throughout the district.
There are 128 union councils, 55 in Tehsil Jhang, 44 in Tehsil Chiniot, 16 in Tehsil Shorkot and 13 in Tehsil Ahmed Pur Sial. In all 1,509 polling stations have been set up out of which 230 are for males, 224 for females and 1,055 are for combined seats. At these polling stations 1,509 presiding officers, 9,580 assistant presiding officers and 4,790 polling officers will perform their duties. The total number of voters in the district is 1,441,182. Of them 764,970 are males and 676,212 females. The total number of seats in 128 union councils is 1,664 and total number of candidates contesting for these seats are 4,811 out which 380 are contesting for Nazim and Naib Nazim, 2,462 for Muslim general councillors, 524 for general councillor ladies, 1,076 for labour men, 353 for labour councillor female and 15 for minority seats.
Eight Nazim and Naib Nazim had been elected unopposed. Others elected unopposed included four Muslim male councillors, 33 general Muslim female councillors, two male workers, 81 ladies workers and 28 minority councillors. On 82 minority seats and nine workers ladies seats not a single candidate have filed their nomination papers.
