Johar bridge in Block-18, Gulistan-e-Jouhar, Karachi, is damaged and its condition is further deteriorating day by day without maintenance by the concern authorities. The walkways on both sides of the bridge are cracked with a few big holes. Any pedestrian using the walkway of the bridge can slip down 40-50 feet deep on the railway track causing fatal injuries or death.
The side barriers on both sides of the bridge are dangerously low and damaged, requiring their elevation to a safe height to ensure safety to the pedestrians and vehicular traffic.
This bridge is the main entry link into Gulistan-e-Jouhar from Rashid Minhas Road providing 24 hours movement of huge vehicular and pedestrian traffic over it. The matter has been notified to the Cantonment Board Faisal (CBF), Director, Military Lands and Cantonments Karachi, City Nazim and Chief Secretary, Sindh, from time to time hut nothing has materialised so far.
It is to be noted that the President General Pervez Musharraf visited this bridge and the damaged roads of Gulistan-e-Jouhar during the year 2003 and ordered the concerned authorities to repair.
The Governor of Sindh and Director-General, Military Lands and Cantonments, Islamabad, are requested to kindly arrange the immediate repair of Johar Bridge for public convenience and safety in compliance with Presidential instructions.
