Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Senator Tariq Azim while refuting the rigging charges by opposition urged the political leadership to learn accepting the peoples' verdict.
Speaking at a private television channel's programme on Tuesday, he said, when the elections were held at such a large scale, occurrence of some minor untoward incidents could not be ruled out. The overall process was transparent and peaceful, he added.
He said, Pakistan Muslim League would hold seminars on the topic of local bodies wherein political leaders as well as experts would express their point of view.
The issue of holding the local bodies election on party or non-party basis would also come under discussion, he added.
Tariq Azim said it doesn't matter whether the elections were held on party or non-party basis they would be credible only when the political leadership comes with open heart to accept the results.
He said the sitting government had not set a new tradition by holding the elections on non-party basis. These were the ninth elections of these institutions, which were held on non-party basis, including those held during Nawaz Sharif tenure in 1991.
To a question, he said that President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz had stated that enlightened and moderate elements had won in most of the constituencies and extremist and fundamentalist elements were defeated in these elections.
They did not mention the name of any party, he added. The Minister said that there were moderates in every political party even in the Mutahidda Majlis-i-Amal.
He said there was no perfection anywhere in the world and the government was open to criticism and is reedy to accommodate the genuine demands of opposition.
