Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Karachi on Tuesday acquitted an alleged activist of banned Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) in the parcel bomb cases on lack of evidences.
"Court has exonerated Muhammad Athar in three cases under explosive substance act in which he is charged with sending parcel bombs to offices of Sindh home secretary and police officials," defence counsel Aamir Mansoob Qureshi said.
"The prosecution case was highly doubtful as there were glaring contradictions in the testimonies of its witnesses which was not relied by the court, he added.
Muhammad Athar alias Khalid Memon was arrested by police in February 2003 along with his associate Sajid Jabbar from Nazimabad area Karachi.
Police accused them of sending parcel bombs to offices of the Home Secretary, DIG-Operation of Karachi, the SP of Civil Lines on October 16, 2002, which caused injuries to government officials and police personnel.
The administrative judge of the ATC earlier acquitted Sajid in the initial stage of case as evidence was not found against him.
