Iraq criticised the Arab League on Wednesday for not playing a more active role in the country, accusing it of paying lip service rather than exerting efforts to help Iraqis.
"We spent more than two years demanding the League play a key, pragmatic, perceptible and enterprising role, but did not hear anything apart from statements and little effort," Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari told reporters in Kuwait.
"We have a complaint against Arab diplomacy. Unfortunately many Arab countries did not take any serious, positive steps about the Iraqi political situation," he said.
Iraq has asked other Arab countries to restore full diplomatic relations with Baghdad and said it would set up a protected zone for diplomats to live and work in safety.
Insurgents in Iraq recently kidnapped and killed diplomats from Egypt and Algeria. Egypt has reduced its mission in Baghdad to a skeleton staff.
"The Iraqi government is displeased with the statements by Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa. We believe the statements were ... inappropriate," Zebari said.
