National Accountability Bureau (NAB) (Sindh) director-general Major General Mukhtar Ahmed has said there is no case against former Karachi nazim Niamatullah Khan. He was talking to newsmen during a seminar "Role of Civil Society in Eradication Corruption" at a local hotel on Monday.
Major General Mukhtar Ahmed said there are only few complaints against some other former district nazims, but the NAB has not received any case against Niamatullah Khan so far. He said, presently, 300 to 350 corruption cases are under investigation of NAB.
He said NAB works in pursuance of its own strategies as an independent institution. There is no political pressure and opposition's allegations against NAB of harassing their leaders are baseless, he added.
Earlier, speaking at the seminar, the NAB DG said corruption was deep-rooted in the society and only involvement of public in getting rid of this menace could increase transparency, decrease corruption and ultimately eliminate it.
"NAB is working on three aspects including awareness, prevention and prosecuting," he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Sindh secretary for culture, tourism, sports and youth affairs Mehtab Akbar Rashdi said NAB is monitoring corruption, but "we have to think about other ways of corruption which are being ignored".
Former Justice Hazik-ul-Khairi said there are so many maphias existing in the country, which are destroying the whole the system. Anybody could not dare to take any action against these maphias.
Sajjad Mir, a senior journalist, termed the feudal system responsible of corruption in the society.
He said although NAB is working in very right direction but it cannot eradicate corruption alone. "Our religious, ethical and social norms are our best asset and we have to adopt these norms to make a very positive change in out society," he added.
Barrister Shahida Jamil said everything has been changed in the society. VIP culture, armed guards, non-punctuality, fostering false values, wearing uniforms on public places, misusing of office cars, show of power and other things are being practices by the everyone nowadays.
