Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA) Karachi is holding a conference on the theme of "Preventive Medicine" at Liaquat National Hospital auditorium on September 10, 2005.
Speaking at a press conference at Karachi Press Club on Tuesday, Dr Misbah-ul-Aziz, president of the conference said that the conference would attract a large number of doctors of all disciplines and ranks.
He said that the inaugural session would be presided over by Naimatullah Khan, former City Nazim Karachi. A live videoconference will be held with Dr Zakir Naik, President Islamic Research Foundation. He will speak on "Quran and Science" and will answer questions of the panellists and audience.
Reputed speakers and medical specialists are invited in scientific and plenary sessions. The scientific session will be on women health, cardiology, diabetes, neuro-psychiatry and paediatrics.
The plenary sessions are the highlights in Pima conference and directed towards stimulating and thought provoking discussions on ethical issues related to medical practices.
Dr Misbah said that two such sessions are going to be held in the pre-lunch period on "Tobacco and Health" and "Preventive Hepatology" and one on "Critical issues in Medical Practice".
"In the session on "Tobacco and Health" our emphasis will be to highlight the plague to tobacco in Pakistan, the harm of smokeless tobacco and Islamic perspective on tobacco use", he said adding that this will be in the form of panel discussion. Panellists include Professor Javaid Khan, Professor Sirajuddin, Dr Najib Naimatullah and Shujauddin Sheikh. The session will be presided over by Professor Naeem Jafri.
The next session will be on "Preventive Hepatology". The growing number of chronic hepatitis 'B' and 'C' patients in Pakistan is an alarming phenomenon. This is largely preventable, being spread by human means, like unsafe use of syringes, blades, surgical products and blood transfusion. The disease is itself controllable by the use of vaccines. This session will be directed on these issues, discussed by panellists including Dr Saad Khalid Naz, Dr S. A. Mujeeb and Dr Huma Qureshi.
The final session is on "Critical issues in Medical Profession". Pima considers its duty to sensitise the society and doctors community on issues that are common and need guidelines. Problems of mal-practices are manifold, unnecessary expenditures in health care delivery burdening poor patients with extra tests, GP and specialist doctor laboratory interactions are few of them.
In addition, advertisements of "cure" of diseases by quacks, relationship of pharmaceutical industry with doctors, mal-practices in organ transplants and other issues are to be addressed. The chief guest of the session will be Health Secretary Sindh, Dr Naushad Sheikh while Professor A. Ghaffar Billoo will be the chairman.
The panellists include Professor Ejaz Vohra, Professor Anwar Naqvi, Professor Riaz Qureshi, Dr Misbah-ul-Aziz, Dr Sher Shah Syed and Haroon Qasim, while Dr Farrukh Abdali will be the moderator.
These discussions are important for the sensitisation of doctors and the society. "We feel that the message needs projection through media so that a larger segment of the people must be made aware", Dr Misbah said.
Professor Abdus Samad, chairman of the conference, Professor Abdul Ghaffar Billoo, Professor Ejaz Vohra, Professor Shaukat Ali, Dr Abdul Maalik and others were also present on this occasion.
