The City District Government Karachi (CDGK) will come up with a new strategy to check the prices and hoarding of essential commodities during Ramazan.
In this regard, first pre-Ramazan price meeting was held here on Tuesday with EDO Enterprise & Investment Promotion (E&IP) Raeesuddin Paracah in the chair. The meeting was attended by retailers, wholesalers, manufactures, etc.
Raeesuddin Paracha told Business Recorder that the meeting discussed at length about the availability of essential commodities during Ramazan.
He pledged that nobody would be let to do profiteering during Ramazan and violators of price-related laws would be dealt sternly.
Raeesuddin Paracah said that under the new strategy, four to five magistrates would be appointed in each town of the city, which would take the total number of magistrates to 80-90 and these would be sufficient to keep an eye on hoarders and profiteers.
"Those found to be selling the essential items other than the notified prices would be fined on the spot or would be sent to jail and even awarded both punishments", he added.
Paracha said that a new comprehensive strategy to stabilise the prices would be announced before Ramazan and modalities are being worked out for it.
When his attention to previous year's failure of city government to control the prices during Ramazan, the EDO said it was learnt from the shortcomings of the last year, and hoped that people would be provided relief during Ramazan.
He said the meeting decided that Ghee prices would be kept at the same level during Ramazan and owners of Ghee mills have been asked to lower the prices voluntarily during Ramazan to facilitate the people.
"Our objective is to provide relief to people and we need the support of mill-owners, retailers and wholesalers as government desires that people related to trade of these items should not only control the prices but also give the concessional packages," he added.
