Pakistan Postal Services Corporation (PPSC) has initiated work to computerise 21 more general post offices by June next year, according to PPSC Deputy Director General Ghulam Panjtan Rizvi. He told APP in an interview the plan would be carried out within yearly budget allocated by government for machinery and equipment.
There are 80 general post offices (GPOs) in the country. Four have already been equipped with computer technology, Rizvi said adding 21 more GPOs would be computerised by the end of June next.
The Postal Services Network has 11,000 sub-offices around the country, which linked with 80 GPOs, are providing services in every nook and corner of the country, Rizvi said.
Rizvi said the process of computerisation was started from the main offices keeping in view the workload and public convenience.
The pension branch of Rawalpindi GPO was computerised first to facilitate pensioners, he said. The software was developed with the help of a foreign software company to provide the best results and swift services to the public, Rizvi said.
He said the department was striving to provide postal services of international standard. In this connection two model post offices - Post Mall Islamabad and Post Mall Lahore - have already been set up.
The computerised service would enhance public confidence as a result of swift and reliable operations by the department and the impact was already showing after the partial computerisation, said Rizvi.
A computerised receipt is issued for a money order, and registry without long wait in a que. A customer can remit money within minutes from one city to another through fax money transfer system, the DDG said.
Rizvi said the department would also equip sub-post offices gradually with the computer technology to provide best possible services.
