"It is not good to gift Israel before it really implements the peace process," says an official of the Palestinian Authority, in reaction to the historic meeting between the foreign ministers of Pakistan and Israel!
Why should Pakistan listen to the Palestinian Authority for framing its foreign policy? It is indeed remarkable and commendable that for the first time in the 59 years of our existence, we have aligned our foreign policy to the dictates of our own national and international interests.
During all these years, Pakistan has been grappling with the Kashmir issue and the Palestinian Authority and the rest of the Arab world paid merely lip service support to Pakistan. In fact the romancing of late Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat with India and the Indian leadership is still afresh in the memory of the Pakistani nation.
In today's newspaper there simultaneously also appears the news items that says "Abdullah, King of Jordan will make a historic visit to Israel next month" and "Egypt and Israel agree to sign Gaza Border Deal". If our Arab "brothers" are engaging Israel in dialogue why should Pakistan's move to overtly engage Israel be seen negatively by the Muslim Ummah?
This détente with Israel should have happened long back, I applaud President Musharraf for this bold initiative and wish him good luck for the forthcoming address he is going to make to the World Jewish Conference in New York later this month.
Pakistan and Israel are two ideological states that are locked in historical and traditional conflicts and it appears that now is the most opportune that their co-operation will lead to the resolution of Kashmir and Palestinian issues.
P.S. will somebody explain to MMA that the Jews of Medina lived peacefully during the life time of our Holy Prophet (PBUH)?
