As per the print media reports, the service tenure of 3 out of the 5 members of the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) has been curtailed from five years to three years through a presidential proclamation. Resultantly, three members will stand relieved of their responsibilities with immediate effect.
Therefore, the interviews for various posts which were scheduled to be commenced by the Commission from the 29th August,2005 will stand postponed indefinitely.
The rationale behind the presidential decree is stated to be that the influential bosses in the government were discontented with the decisions of the Commission refusing to issue "No Objection Certificates" for employment of various personnel on "contract" basis which ran contrary to their wishes. It is not known whether it was the sole decision of the president to issue the required decree or some vested interest in the government convinced the president to do so.
In any case, it is an unfortunate decision weakening an important national institution for the benefit of a few individuals. It also speaks adversely on the government's claims to have already introduced "good governance".
Will the president please a give a second thought to the issue and restore the stauts-quo?
