Declaring emergency to deal with the situation caused by heavy rains in Karachi, the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) on Saturday shifted 750 people to safer locations from Katchi Abadies near the banks of Lyari River.
These people had been shifted from dangerous low-lying areas of Rehmat Colony, Madina Colony and Zia Colony to a relief camp set up at the Government Boys and Girls Secondary School, Block 1, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, where they were being provided with food, other necessities and medical facilities.
According to a statement of CDGK, relief teams have been formed under the supervision of Shakoor Pathan to deal with the situation arising out of heavy downpour in the area. However, the situation is under control in other parts of the city. To drain standing water on the roads, towns have been provided the machinery and pumps, which have started the draining of water.
Meanwhile, Caretaker CDGK and DCO Karachi Fazal Rehman visited low-lying areas of the city, including banks of Lyari River to review the situation caused by the rains and inspect the arrangements to shift residents of katchi abadies to safer places.
The DCO directed all staff of works & services, parks, fire brigade, civil defence and health departments to remain on duty.
He also directed the departments concerned to drain rainwater standing on main roads within 24 hours and relief operation should continue if rained further.
Gulshan-e-Iqbal town has cancelled leaves of all its employees and deployed workers equipped with pumps on various roads and streets of town. Caretaker Gulshan-e-Iqbal Fazel Ahmed Bukhari is monitoring the operation.
He ordered deployment of special teams of sanitary staff at Civic Center, Old Sabzi Mandi, Sir Shah Suleman Road and Stadium Road to drain standing water.
While offices of Landhi Town Municipal Administration will remain open on Sunday, and all leaves of staff have been cancelled and emergency declared in whole town.
