Punjab Sports Minister Naeem Ullah Khan Shahani has resigned from his office for what he said 'record rigging' in first and second phases of local government elections (LG) in his constituency, District Bhakkar, and provincial government's failure to take action on his complaint.
Shahani made this announcement at an emergency press conference here on Monday. He said he and all his family members believed in neat and clean politics, but unfortunately this time LG polls in his constituency in District Bhakkar were rigged, and honest people were deprived of being elected. As provincial minister he had not been able to control polling of fake votes. Therefore, he had no moral justification to hold his office, he added.
"I have sent my resignation to Punjab Chief Minster Chaudhry Pervez Elahi," he said, and added that soon after assuming power, President Pervez Musharraf had talked much about 'good governance' but unfortunately there is no such thing (good governance) in Punjab."
He urged PML chief Shujaat Hussain and Chief Minister Pervez Elahi to take steps to block entry of corrupt people into power.
To a question Shahani said that he would also bring the affairs of Bhakkar district in particular and Punjab in general to the notice of President Pervez Musharraf.
