Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi announced on Saturday special package of Rs 1 billion for the development of Rawalpindi district. He made this announcement at a public gathering in Gujar Khan, where he also inaugurated "Gujar Khan underpass" constructed by the National Highway Authority.
He praised the work of NHA and said the underpass would not only control heavy traffic flow but would also increase commercial activities in the area.
He said such underpasses would also be constructed in other parts of the country.
Besides, the chief minister said the Punjab government is working on the construction of small dams to ensure availability of water in different parts of the province.
The chief minister said the government would provide incentives for setting up new industries in the province to fight unemployment.
He said after free education up to matriculation, the provincial government has planned to provide free medical aids and upgradation of health facilities.
The chief minister also sought elected councillors' support for Pakistan Muslim League-backed candidates in the third phase of the local government election.
The chief minister said party workers and leaders should follow party discipline and abide by decisions of the party.
Information minister Sheikh Rashid said due to the leadership of Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, Pakistan Muslim league is making progress and members from opposition parties were continuously joining the party.
He said majority of the opposition members would join PML by 2007 due to its people-friendly policies.
He criticised the opposition, saying on the one hand they were accusing the government of pre-poll rigging while on the other they are actively participating in it.
He said opposition parties are playing dual game for their vested interests and added they would probably take part in the election under the leadership of President Pervez Musharraf in 2007.
The minister was of the view political future of the PPP would depend on the decision of the Swiss court.
Punjab law minister Mohammad Basharat Ranjha and PML candidate for Rawalpindi district nazim Raja Javed Akhlas also addressed the gathering.
