Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad has described the book written by Mahmudul Aziz, managing editor of UPP and Pictorial News Review, on Press Freedom and Role of Newspaper Editors in Pakistan as an important document of the history of the print media in Pakistan.
He made this observation at a special presentation ceremony held in his office in Karachi where the author presented him a copy of his book, appreciating his stand in favour of press freedom in Pakistan especially Sindh.
The governor said that there is intense need to inform the new generation in Pakistan, including young journalists about the struggle for Pakistan and the role of the newspaper editors in the freedom movement and in the post-freedom period.
Ibad observed that it was important to have full knowledge of the various events in the history of Pakistan as also the efforts made by the various persons, especially the Muslim editors in the Pakistan movement days.
He said that Mahmudul Aziz had done a good job by highlighting in the historical narrative the role of newspaper editors in respect to the struggle for press freedom.
Mahmudul Aziz said on the occasion that he had written the book as a service to Pakistan to highlight the role played by newspaper editors during the independence movement and after independence until today.
He specially invited attention of the governor to the proceedings of the All India Muslim Newspaper Editors Conference of May, 1947 held in New Delhi which was addressed by Quaid-e-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah and Liaquat Ali Khan, who lauded the role of Muslim newspaper editors in the Pakistan movement.
The author also mentioned the historic agreement between Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the CPNE and the APNS on 21st March 1991.
Mahmudul Aziz stressed that he was grateful to his father Syed Abdul Hafiz, who founded the UPP and was one of the pioneers of journalism in the subcontinent.
