Pakistan People's Party Sindh has suggested appointing a caretaker chief minister to ensure free and fair polls for electing District and Tehsil/Town Nazims in the province.
Accusing Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim of violating Election Commission's code of ethics during local government polls, PPP urged apex courts to take suomoto action on the overall situation.
Talking to newsmen at his residence in Karachi, President PPP Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah contended that chief minister nominated Nazim candidates in many tehsils and districts, which was totally in violation of election commission's code of ethics.
Responsibility of chief minister is to maintain law and order situation in the province and maintain neutral position in polls, as the elections are being held on non-party basis, he added.
PPP leader said President Musharaf and donor agencies were talking of good governance, but here the Chief Minister was acting contrary to it violating the laws. "How a common man can seek justice in such conditions," he questioned.
Election commission imposed ban on transfer and postings, but the CM continued such acts and various senior officials were sent on forced leave for non-co-operation, he alleged.
He alleged further that on the directives of Chief Minister, the police are harassing Nazim candidates of Awam Dost Panel and putting pressure on them to support ruling party-backed candidates. He called up on the human rights organisations and Amnesty International to raise their voice on the situation.
If Election Commission has a little sympathy with its code of conduct, then the Chief Minister should be restrained from taking part in such activities, he urged.
