About 8,000 CNG buses will be brought in the province phase-wise in five years under a federal government programme in line with the government's efforts for conservation and protection of the environment.
This was stated by Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan while talking to newsmen here on Wednesday after inaugurating "Environmental Studies Centre" established at the Hamdard University main campus.
Dr Ibad said the government is fully aware of its global responsibility towards protection of environment and, therefore, it is playing its active part to combat the menace of pollution.
He said the federal government has formulated a comprehensive policy in this regard which is being followed by the provinces.
The governor said the three on-going effluent treatment plants being established in the city's industrial areas by the tanneries would contribute considerably towards the cause by treating the sewerage water for its reuse in the industries.
He said three such plants will also be set up with the assistance of he federal government.
A total of 350 MGD sewerage approximately is produced by the city whereas the existing plants with effluent treatment capacity of 150 MGD due to non-maintenance can treat only about 100 MGD. Efforts are being made to make the existing plants work to its optimum capacity, he added.
To a question regarding Landhi water issue, the governor said the lack of awareness and improper handling of water connections by inexperienced people led to the contamination of drinking water in the area.
He said further investigation is on and action would be initiated against any department found responsible for negligence in this regard.
