The representative of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Winsent McClain while expressing full confidence on law enforcing agencies of Pakistan in combating drugs and arms smuggling has said that the UN would continue to support them.
"It is quite satisfactory that eleven law enforcing agencies of Pakistan are united in eradicating drugs and arms-related crimes," the UNODC country head said.
He was addressing the concluding ceremony of the Advance Enforcement Course for the officials of the different law enforcing agencies, jointly organised by Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) and the UNODC.
The two-week long course was attended by officials of Frontier Corps, Coast Guards, Customs, Rangers, Punjab and Sindh Police, Excise and Taxation, Airport Security force, Maritime Security and the ANF.
The participants of the course were given know-how about the modern techniques to combat drug use and abuse.
Winsent McClain said that Pakistan and various other countries are at high risk of HIV/AIDS due to exchange of used syringes. "Many drug addicts taking drugs use common syringe, which has increased the risk of HIV/AIDS causing a threat to the society", he said, adding that another threat is that these drug addicts sell their blood to fulfill their urge, which is also alarming.
He said that at the moment there are only 3000 HIV positive people in Pakistan and if at this stage situation is controlled it would have no dangerous effect.
Speaking on the occasion ANF Academy commandant Lieutenant Colonel Sajid Aziz Aslam said that the main aim of organising this advance course was to give the law enforcement agencies know-how about the latest combating techniques.
Certificates and awards were given to participants of the course.
