Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has urged the civil society, non-governmental organisations and philanthropists to come forward and play their role in integrating disabled persons in the society.
"The public-private partnership can play a key role to accelerate the process of integration of special persons by pooling their resources," Prime Minister Aziz said while talking to Ms Judith E. Heumann, World Bank Advisor on Disability and Development, who called on him at the PM House on Saturday.
"We must reach out and integrate disabled persons in every segment of the society to make them useful citizens," he said.
The premier said the government has reserved a two-percent quota for the disabled in the civil services to encourage them and utilise their talent and services in the public sector.
"The recent international seminar for disabled in Islamabad reflects the keen interest of the government in their welfare," he said, adding, "the government believes that no nation can progress unless women work along with men as equal partners."
He said: "The government is pursuing a policy of inclusion and has mandated representations of women in all tiers of government, from the local to national level, by reserving 30 percent seats in city and district councils and 20 percent in the national and provincial assemblies."
Prime Minister Aziz said various initiatives were also being taken by the government to encourage participation of women in all segments of the society and enable them to play their due role. "They are also being provided greater opportunities to enhance their social and economic empowerment," he added.
Ms Judith E. Heumann appreciated the policies being pursued by the government for mainstreaming disabled persons and hosting of an international seminar for the disabled persons.
