A total of 88 Muslim and 12 non-Muslim couples were entered into wedlock in a ceremony at Governor House on Sunday. The marriage ceremony of couples of poor strata of society has been arranged with the help of philanthropists. Punjab Governor Lieutenant General Khalid Maqbool (Retd) speaking in the ceremony said that the effort undertaken in this regard has been extended to whole of the country.
The governor appreciating role of President Musharraf in promoting cause of women in the country said due to his efforts number of women representatives in assemblies that was 2 percent six years ago had risen to 20 percent. He said there were now 24,500 elected representatives of women in Union Councils in the country at present.
Punjab governor said marriage was a sacred trust and people who enjoy better economic status must contribute in helping poor in entering this bondage, he added.
