The steering committee of the united opposition will meet here on September 30 to review the political situation and thrash out a future line of action.
"The committee will meet in the afternoon at the residence of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) Chairman Raja Zafarul Haq, mainly to chalk out a strategy for the holy month of Ramazan, Zafar Iqbal Jhagra told Business Recorder here on Wednesday.
He said that some member parties had reservations over General Faiz Ali Chishti (Retd) and Hameed Gul's inclusion in the united opposition and their representation in the steering committee.
However, he contended that in the larger interest of the cause of the opposition, such matters could be overlooked.
Zafar Jhagra, who is Secretary General of the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD), said that the committee would be debating various proposals on how to mobilise masses for a countrywide campaign.
"We plan to hold corner meetings at Iftar in each tehsil and district to create awareness among the people about the flopped policies of the government," he claimed.
He did not agree with this correspondent that the opposition had failed to cash in on rising prices of every item of daily use.
He added that their strike against unemployment, price hike and rigging in the local bodies' elections was a success and the masses fully participated in it.
Zafar said that day-to-day increase in the prices of petroleum products and their impact on the salaried class, growing unemployment and law and order situation would be the main topic of the meeting.
He said that the opposition parties have complete unanimity on the question of removal of President General Pervez Musharraf and the government.
"The only issue after Eid-ul-Fitr will be when and how to launch a countrywide movement to send the rulers packing," he said.
The ARD leader said that the opposition parties would like to contact other alliances, such as the Pakistan Oppressed Nations Movement (PONM), to be part of the united opposition.
When asked if the masses had not become indifferent to political parties, he said that it was not true, the public wanted supremacy of the Parliament and the Constitution, and supported the opposition's cause in this connection.
