The overdraft of the chamber has been reduced to Rs 2.2 million in September 2005 from Rs 5.4 million last year, besides brining out chamber budget from deficit.
This was stated by Najam Rehan, the outgoing president of Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) here on Thursday while addressing the 45th annual general meeting of the chamber. Najam Rehan was given a standing ovation when he came to address the members of the chamber. Najam Rehan along with his team has completed their tenure and would retire on October 1. The meeting held in the lawns of chamber while the attendance was very thick.
Najam Rehan said that last year when he along with his team took charge, the chamber was caught in menace of overdraft and a deficit budget. "We took the reign with the commitment to decrease the overdraft and bring the chamber in better financial position", he added.
He said that the revenue of the chamber has increased from Rs 5.6 million last year to Rs 7.7 million till this date. "When I got elected the chamber had a deficit of Rs 334,000 and now this year chamber has a surplus budget of Rs 850,000, which loudly speaks about our dedicated efforts", he added.
He said that his efforts have yielded better results as the membership of the chamber has increased from 1,852 in 2004 to 2,334 in 2005. The renewal has also shown upward trends with an increase from 1,294 last year to 1,701 this year.
The main aim of chamber is to play its role in socio economic development of the country besides help business community in exports. "We have send three trade delegations to China, where they took part in international trade fairs, besides six other delegations to Malaysia, Thailand, India, Germany and UK", he added.
He said that the chamber has a rich tradition of smooth and dignified transfer of power and the same has been done this year, when newly elected working body took charge of the chamber.
Expressing his satisfactions over the functioning of the chamber he said that the chamber had played effective role for resolving various tax related issues of business community including GST, income tax, turnover tax and others.
The outgoing RCCI president said that the chamber welcomed businessman of every level and always used efforts to resolve their problems. Chamber is a bridge between government and business community and we played our role much better than ever. He thanked his team, seniors of the chamber and members for their co-operation in running the affairs.
Speaking on the occasion, new president of the RCCI Jalil Ahmed Malik said that he would use all out efforts to lead the chamber towards new heights. "The affairs of chamber are like a torch of Olympics, one player is taking to from one point to another and from that point another player is taking. I will take this torch from this point and I assure you that I and my team would not look back", he added.
He expressed his resolve to utilise the platform of chamber for introducing the products of the industrialists of the chamber to international market and help in further industrialisation in the region. Besides industrial products, chamber would promote the agriculture products as well he said adding that the efforts would be made for promotion of agriculture.
Jalil Malik, who was senior vice president with Najam Rehan, assured the business community that he will play his role in resolving their problems and act as bridge between government and business community. He appealed to all members of the chamber to help him in running the affairs and resolving the problems of the business community.
Former presidents of chamber, Ikramullah Lone, Mian Pervez Aslam, outgoing executives and newly elected office bearers also address the function.
At the end medal-giving ceremony was held in which outgoing office bearers gave medals to newly elected office bearers, which is being considered as oath taking ceremony of the chamber. Outgoing president Najam Rehan and his two deputies were given albums of photographs and press clippings.
