The Pakistan-European Union Troika talks concluded here with the two sides agreed to enhance co-operation in the war against terrorism, and greater economic interaction. Pakistan-EU Troika talks are the part of continuing dialogue between the two sides held alternatively at ministerial and political directors level.
The EU Troika delegation was led by British Permanent Under Secretary, Foreign and Commonwealth Offices, Sir Michael Jay, representing UK the current president of the EU and included senior officials of the European Commission and representatives of the next president of the EU Council, Austria.
Foreign Secretary, Riaz Muhammad Khan led the Pakistan side in the Pak-EU Troika talks held here on Tuesday. During the talks Pakistan stressed the need for ensuring enhanced market access within the European Union while both the sides sought further co-operation in diverse areas.
The Third Generation Agreement (TGA) ratified last year could greatly facilitate such mutually beneficial interaction.
During the detailed parleys the two sides reviewed the current relations between Pakistan and the EU, which is Pakistan's largest trade, investment and development partner, with a view to further enhancing co-operation.
They also held discussions on wide ranging regional and international issues of common interest, including Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan-India relations and regional stability.
The Pakistan side briefed the EU delegation on the ongoing composite dialogue between Pakistan and India. It was emphasised that the dialogue process was irreversible and both sides had agreed to seek a permanent settlement of all issues, including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. The issues relating to Baglihar Dam and Kishanganga were also discussed.
The EU side appreciated Pakistan's vital role in the global fight against terrorism. The two sides agreed to enhance their co-operation in the area of counter-terrorism.
Expressing his satisfaction at the growing commercial relations between Pakistan and the EU, foreign secretary impressed upon the EU Troika the need for ensuring enhanced market access to Pakistan within the European Union.
The two sides agreed to work together for tapping the huge potential for further growth of co-operation in diverse areas. The Third Generation Agreement (TGA) ratified last year could greatly facilitate such mutually beneficial interaction.
