Renowned horticulturist Dr Tariq Iqtadar, presently associated with the Horticultural Research Station for Floriculture and Landscaping, AARI, Faisalabad, said promotion of floriculture among farmers could alleviate the poverty and strengthen national economy.
Dr Tariq Iqtadar was delivering a lecture in seminar entitled 'Promote Floriculture- Alleviate Poverty' at AARI, Faisalabad.
Director Research Dr Abdul Haq presided over the proceedings and prominent scientists from AARI, UAF, NIAB and NIBGE attended the seminar.
Dr Tariq described in detail the role of floriculture in alleviation of poverty in Pakistan. He said, "commercial floriculture is a continuous farming, generating income for the growers during the whole year."
He further said that floriculture is most suitable farming option for our farmers as the activity is labour intensive and creates new job opportunities for surplus labour.
He highlighted the export potential of flowers to foreign countries and stated that proper grading, packing, transport and storage facilities could pave the way for enhancing exports to other countries.
Dr Rana Aslam, a floriculture scientist, describing the practical aspects of floriculture, said that with technical knowledge and marketing awareness the flower growers could earn sufficient income through flower cultivation, as compared to other crops.
In his concluding remarks, Dr Abdul Haq, Director Research stressed the importance of conducting research on marketing aspects of floriculture.
He said that floriculture among the farmers could only be promoted if marketing problems faced by the growers were solved. He told the participants that promotion of floriculture could undoubtedly alleviate the poverty if the constraints hampering the popularisation of flower growing are properly tackled.
