Sindh Minister for Home and Co-ordination Rauf Siddiqui has said that a large number of projects are under construction and will be completed in a year. There are a number of projects in the pipeline while others have been planned for next three years, he added.
Inaugurating a two-day 'annual exhibition' on building materials and products at the Expo Centre on Friday he said that local and foreign companies were investing in the construction field on a large scale. All this development was due to good law and order situation prevailing in the province.
Rauf opened the show in place of Governor Ishrat-ul-Ibad who could not come due to his extended stay in London.
He said that the government alone could not improve the law and order and every citizen had to play his role. "A lot of time was wasted in the last 50 years, and we have to move fast to make up for the loss," he added
The Minister appealed to the people to approach him if there was any problem in implementation of government projects from the bureaucracy. The government wants to facilitate development work and to ensure that work progresses smoothly in an independent environment.
Earlier, President of Institute of Architects Pakistan (IAP) Aqil Bilgrami in his address said that the Institute had been asked by the government to hold a design competition for the new building of Sindh Secretariat.
He said that despite close relations with the Institute, designs and construction of government buildings in education and social sector were not of quality standards. He urged the Sindh Government to revise rules of construction in the public sector and save wastage of public money on projects.
He said that the Institute had initiated an 'excellence award', which would be given on good projects every two years. Of the 40 projects recommended for the award this year there was not a single government project, he added.
Bilgrami said that the exhibition of architects had become a regular feature and it aimed at bringing the architects, engineers, builders and manufacturers of building materials on one platform.
