Despite fixation of date for commencement of Cane Crushing Season 2005-2006 as October 1, 2005, no sugar mill has taken initiatives to start the process of crushing in any part of Sindh from Saturday.
Sindh Government has under section 8 of the Sugar Factories Act 1950, fixed October 1, 2005 as the commencement of cane crushing season 2005-2006. However, on Saturday, the office of Sugarcane Commission Sindh confirmed no sugar mill had started functioning, even not sparked the boilers, which are usually operated ten days before start of cane crushing.
The official sources informed out of 31 sugar mills, 28 were functional in different parts of the province. Additional Secretary Land Utilisation Nazar Muhammad Baloch, who is also holding the charge of the office of Cane commission Sindh, informed APP the delay in starting cane crushing on the fixed date was violation of Section 16 of Sugar Factories Act 1950, and an action could be initiated under Section 21 of the same act against mills' management, he added.
