The Union of Small & Medium Enterprises (Unisame) invited Eri Kakuta, a Japanese researcher in Pakistan to conduct a study on Pakistan Economy.
Unisame President Zulfikar Thaver welcoming the guest said Pakistan has given priority to the SME sector and is focused on the promotion & development of the SME sector in textiles, commodities, engineering and agro based industries.
He said: "we want to learn from her expertise and benefit from her study." He said she has a vast knowledge and experience and she was in India for two years.
He said we are going to have an SME Policy backed by an SME Act and presented to her the SME Definition under the policy.
He added that the medium sector has joined the mainstream due to the good policy of the government. But he said the small sector still is much behind and needs the urgent attention of the Small & Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda).
He requested Eri to arrange for transfer of technology with Japan to develop the engineering industry of Pakistan on modern lines.
Eri was impressed with Pakistan's economy and said the economy was doing fine except she was concerned about Chinese goods being imported in Pakistan. She asked the participants about Chinese footwear, garments, electronic goods, furniture and other items and their effect on the Pakistan's SME Industries.
She asked what tariff protection was given to the local industries. She was also keen to know whether the vendors are given due recognition and facilities to enable them progress in the right direction.
She was also enquiring about Pakistani rice deals with China and asked whether Pakistan had the quantity of rice required by China. She emphasised on proper planning before commitments.
The Unisame has facilitated her to meet with provincial Chief of Smeda Ijaz Majeed, EPB Trade Consultant Tahir Jamil Naqvi and Haji A Majeed of Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) to complete her study of different sectors.-PR
