In response to the terrible earthquake, the European Commission has earmarked an initial amount of Euros 3.6 million in emergency aid. According to EU in Pakistan, the funds are being made available to partner humanitarian organisations through ECHO, the humanitarian aid department of the European Commission, which comes under the responsibility of Commissioner Louis Michel.
This support will allow for a wide range of needs to be covered and will be deployed for immediate relief operations, including the assistance in emergency medical services and supplies, shelter for people who have lost homes, food and drinking water, sanitation, and basic household items.
Louis Michel, the European Commissioner for Development Humanitarian Aid, has stressed the importance of moving quickly in the aftermath of this disaster.
The emergency aid of Euro 3.6 million would be used for the immediate allocation of emergency funds in response to catastrophes.
Meanwhile, European Union (EU) President Jose Manuel Barroso, in his message addressed to the President Pervez Musharraf, has expressed deep sorrow and grief over the loss of lives in the earthquake. He offered sincere condolences and sympathies on behalf of the European Commission and on his own behalf.
In his message, the EU president said: "Let me assure you that the European Union and the European Commission through its humanitarian Aid Office stand ready to help Pakistan with urgent relief and assistance in this hour of need."
In a similar message of condolence addressed to Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri, the European Commissioner for External Relations, Benita Ferrero Waldner said: "I am shocked to hear the news about Pakistan's worst-ever earthquake, which according to the latest reports, has killed several thousands people and left many injured and homeless."
