Closing stock market indices
Here is how major stock markets outside the United States ended on Monday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: European shares finished higher as record copper prices and soaring bullion boosted mining stocks, but gains were trimmed after a rating cut and sales warning bruised automotive and technology shares.
Mining stocks such as Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton climbed around 2 percent as copper prices held new all-time peaks and gold rose to its highest price in almost 18 years. But a sales warning from Xilinx Inc, which makes programmable microchips, weighed on US shares and knocked European technology stocks off their intraday highs.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 5,022.79 points, up 15.02 or 0.30 percent.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 4,536.22 points, up 7.43 or 0.16 percent.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 6,950.86 points, up 3.91 or 0.06 percent.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 25,965 points, down 1 or 0.00 percent.
SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Shares rose, rebounding from their biggest weekly loss in four years, as traders bought into miners BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto on record copper prices. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index climbed 28.5 points, or 0.64 percent, to 4,469.1, after sliding 4.3 percent last week to end Friday at a five-week closing low.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: South African stocks ended barely changed as further profit-taking cancelled out gains in gold shares on surging bullion prices and cement producer PPC on buoyant cement sales. The All-share index closed at 16,132.23 points, down 4.03 or 0.02 percent.
The All Gold index closed at 2,194.66 points, up 45.49 or 2.12 percent, while the Industrial index closed at 11,774.81 points, down 55.05 or 0.47 percent.
TOKYO STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Tokyo stock market was closed for Health-Sports Day, a national holiday, and resumes trading on Tuesday. On Friday, the benchmark Nikkei average fell 0.99 percent or 131.77 points to 13,227.74.
TAIPEI STOCKS EXCHANGE: Taiwan's stock market is closed on Monday for the National Day holiday. The TAIEX share index closed down 13.97 points, or 0.23 percent, at 6,081.84 on Friday, with losses in US tech shares casting a shadow over the market despite upbeat September sales reports from companies such as AU Optronics Corp.
