The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) will not issue National Tax Numbers (NTNs) to taxpayers without prior verification of data from National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra).
Official sources told Business Recorder on Tuesday that CBR has stopped issuance of NTN without checking the credentials of the taxpayers.
Previously, the NTN Centres used to issue tax numbers to new applicants without verification of information submitted by them. Later, CBR had to cancel the NTNs wherein incorrect information was submitted by the taxpayers. The post-verification process was creating problems for the department as, on the one hand, CBR had issued NTNs, while on the other, the CBR was bound to cancel certificates where Nadra confirmed wrong submission of data.
NTN pre-verification system has been launched, which will issue new tax numbers to applicants within 72 hours. Under the new system, NTN Cells have been given online access system with the Nadra database, which would be used for verification purposes.
Obviously, there is a difference of 72 hours for issuance of NTN, but the pre-verification system will effectively control submission of bogus information/fake identity card numbers.
When asked whether it could be called as delay in allocation of NTN, officials said that the pre-verification by Nadra was necessary to avoid wrong issuance of NTNs.
