The European Commission (EC) has earmarked an initial Euro 3.6 million emergency aid for the earthquake victims in Pakistan, the European Commission delegation said in a statement.
The EU Commission said that funds were being made available to partner humanitarian organisations through ECHO, the humanitarian Aid Department of the European Commission, which comes under the responsibility of Commissioner Louis Michel.
This support will allow for a wide range of needs to be covered and will be deployed for immediate relief operations.
The areas of assistance include emergency medical services and supplies, shelter for people, who have lost homes, food and drinking water, sanitation, and basic household items include kitchen equipment and hygiene kits.
The European Commissioner for Development Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel, stressed the importance of moving quickly in the aftermath of this disaster.
He said that a major earthquake had resulted in terrible suffering and "it is our utmost duty to come forward for help as quickly as possible to the people whose lives have been turned upside down."
Michel maintained that Europe's solidarity with the countries and people, who had struck by this tragedy, was concretely reflected in our prompt decision to release humanitarian funds.
